GRANA PADANO
Grana Padano is an Italian PDO hard and cooked cheese with slow maturation, belonging to the generic family of grana.
It is produced in thirty-two provinces of Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, of Piedmont, of Trentino-Alto Adige, where it assumes, limited to the autonomous province of Trento, the name of Trentingrana, and of Veneto; all phases of the production chain (breeding and milking of the cows, collection and transformation of the milk into cheese, maturation, possible grating) must necessarily take place in the area of origin.
It is the best-selling PDO cheese in the world, and with 1,938,328 wheels exported, it is the most popular Italian cheese abroad.
According to tradition, the grana cheese from the Po Valley was born in 1135 in the Chiaravalle abbey, located on the southern border of Milan; however, the identification of this abbey as the birthplace of the progenitor of Grana Padano is not certain, in fact there was another abbey of the same name in the Po valley, located between Piacenza and Fidenza.
Grana Padano is a unique product. There is no other dairy classification that can use the term "grana". And it is for this reason that the name of this Italian cheese should always be pronounced in full: Grana Padano, since Grana Padano DOP is much more than a denomination: it is the story of an exceptional cheese, of centuries of traditions, passion and mastery.
Recognizing it at first sight is easy: each of the cheese wheels is distinguished by the marks of origin and selection. If they aren't there, then it's not Grana Padano. These brands are unique and personal and differentiate the product from any other cheese on the market. They certify the quality, origin and nature of "typical cheese" and inimitable.
A new logo has been introduced on Grana Padano packaging since September 2022. The transition to the new graphics and therefore the adaptation of the packaging will require a period of time during which the consumer will still be able to find product packaging bearing the old logo on the market.
