TORCELLO
It was the first island in the lagoon to be inhabited, yet centuries ago, Torcello was the cradle of Venetian civilisation, while today it is inhabited by around ten citizens and tourism is their only form of support.
Torcello, mistakenly called Torricelli by many, and is the island located further north.
WHAT SEE:
Devil's Bridge
Legend has it that the bridge was built in a single night, by the Devil himself.
The Throne of Attila
It dates back to the 5th century AD. and was used by the governor of the island.
Torcello Museum
The collections are divided into two adjacent buildings:
- The archaeological section of the museum, which goes from the prehistoric era to the early Christian period, is housed in the Archive Palace.
- The Council Palace, built in the fifteenth century, in Gothic style, presents documents and works from the medieval and modern collection of the island.
Basilica of Torcello
Externally it has particular large windows with stone slab shutters. Inside the Basilica there is a huge Byzantine mosaic depicting the Last Judgment.
Next to the Basilica, we find the Church of Santa Fosca. The exterior has a portico that surrounds the five sides of the building with marble columns, internally the decorations can be traced back to Byzantine art.
