SUP
SUP, acronym for Stand Up Paddle, is a variant of surfing in which you stand balanced on a board and move with the help of a paddle.
It is a crossover sport, combining the best features of surfing and canoeing; in fact, thanks to the paddle, it is possible to perform more sudden maneuvers and significantly improve stability.
Not much information has reached us about the birth of the SUP. For this there are several conflicting opinions regarding its origins.
The first written testimonies date back to the 1778 diaries of the explorer James Cook, in which it is reported that the natives of Hawaii went fishing using boards and paddles.
In particular, in the last ten years, the SUP has gained a lot of popularity also thanks to the development of inflatable SUPs, which have recorded an exponential growth in the number of enthusiasts of this sport.
With its growing diffusion, in the last period different methods of use have also been created:
- SUP racing: competitions in flat water
- SUP trekking: excursions of more than one day in SUP, to discover the coast from a point of
different view
- SUP river: descents in white water, an alternative to kayaking
- SUP fishing: still a niche activity, but developing
- SUP yoga: many surfers practice yoga to train their balance; hence, birth
of SUP yoga was inevitable
