MONTEGRIDOLFO: one of the most beautiful villages in Italy
Once upon a time there was a Castle on the border between Marche and Romagna: in MONTEGRIDOLFO, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, rich in history and wonders to discover.
Surrounded by solid and sturdy walls, inhabited by artisans and wealthy farmers.
At the end of 2000 it was carefully restored: it is a jewel, where you can walk, admire the landscape that surrounds it and browse through the narrow streets.
During the journey you will be able to see rolling green hills, centuries-old olive groves, vines, laurels, breathtaking landscapes, villages on the horizon and cultivated fields, you will travel along the Conca Valley, until you reach the border with the Marches.
Montegridolfo, what to see?
The village has alleys overlooked by buildings and cottages, flowery corners, narrow and picturesque streets, inns and a sweet silence that seems to stop the passage of time.
To enter the village you have to go through the entrance door surmounted by a tower, dating back to the 16th century.
3 streets start from the central square and meet in front of Palazzo Viviani, the only noble residence, today transformed into a welcoming and prestigious hotel.
At the foot of the castle walls, the oratory of San Rocco, protector of beggars and travellers, is worth a visit. Inside, on the same portion of the wall, three artistic testimonies from different centuries create three superimposed representations of "the Madonna with Child enthroned with saints Rocco and Sebastiano”: – by an anonymous from the Marche region (1427?); – by Girolamo Marchesi (1520-1525) – by Guido Cagnacci (1623).
During the Second World War, Montegridolfo was included in the Gothic Line, i.e. the defensive line built by the German military in 1944 to prevent the Allies from reaching the Po Valley. War relics, soldiers' equipment and newspapers are exhibited in the Museo della Linea dei Goti where you can also see films from the Second World War.
