AMERIGO VESPUCCI
Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer of the fifteenth century, known for contributing to the discovery of the American continent.
He was born in 1454 in Florence and, for most of his life, took part in exploratory expeditions sponsored by Spain and
Portugal.
Vespucci wrote detailed letters for each expedition where he described the new lands, the fauna and the flora he had
met.
When in 1492 America was discovered by Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, was the first to understand that those lands just
discoveries were actually of a new continent.
In honour of Amerigo Vespucci, in 1507, the cartographer Martin Waldseemüller decided to name the new continent in a
Latinized version of his name: "America".
The 11 October 2022 the ship-school of the Navy Amerigo Vespucci has spent some time off the coast of Riccione
to greet the city before leaving for Ancona.
Over the years there have been several controversies and
discussions about him... however Amerigo Vespucci will always remain
a fundamental character in the history of exploration.
