Since he was a child he has played the guitar and sang ditties and songs from his homeland. He attended the "Pietro Siciliani" teaching institute in Lecce, which he left at seventeen to move to Milan. Working in the "Ildollar" restaurant in the Lombardy capital, frequented by showbiz personalities, he had the opportunity to make himself known to the master producer Pino Massara, who invited him to undergo an audition at Celentano-Massara, an affiliated production house open to research of new talents.
Al Bano recorded his first album, "La strada/Devo dirti di no" in 1965 for Fantasy and began performing as a supporter in Adriano Celentano's shows, without however abandoning his job. He made his debut on television, on Settevoci, a musical game hosted by Pippo Baudo, where he managed to win the applause meter test for four consecutive weeks.
In 1967 he achieved his first success with the song "Nel sole". His voice is his strong point and makes him appreciated by the public and the press who speak of a "second Claudio Villa". Nel sole also becomes a film, which will have him and a young Romina Power as its protagonist: a sentimental bond is created between the two which will later lead, despite the opposition of their respective families, to marriage. They will also share a fantastic musical career together.
After a career full of multiple successes, his last appearance on television was on 8 February 2023, he performed as a guest at the Sanremo Festival together with Massimo Ranieri and Gianni Morandi with the best songs from their repertoire.
